Queensland
in Australia needed someone to caretake their islands on the Great Barrier Reef
for six months. They were prepared to pay them $AUS150,000 for the privilege,
provide an ocean front villa with swimming pool, (although with one of the
world’s most beautiful oceans on one’s doorstep it is unlikely to be needed!),
to explore the islands, swim, dive, snorkel and generally enjoy the tropical
climate and lifestyle.
Of course,
this job offer did not go unnoticed. Over 34000 would-be caretakers from all
over the world applied but there could only be one winner. Ben had just
recently finished trekking round Africa for charity and was ready for a new
challenge. His sense of fun, allied to his dedication and great way with
people, made him the stand out choice. Ben had a film crew from National
Geographic follow him while he was on his islands, making a weekly documentary about his
adventures, raising both his profile and that of the region.
Ben’s days
were spent in and out of the sea, swimming, diving, kayaking, so it meant that
not just any watch would do him. As he needed to keep track of the time because
of his commitment to keeping the world up to date with what he was up to, he
needed a timepiece that he could rely on absolutely. We were pleased when Ben chose to wear the
Extreme Diver 1000M because it meant that not only did he put the watch through
a real test, but his high profile meant good exposure for Alpina.
But Ben has
not stopped his adventures just because his contract came to an end. He is
still the Ambassador for Queensland tourism and is still chasing after exciting
adventures. His next project is a 3 month kayak around the islands of the Great
Barrier Reef and he hopes to have National Geographic TV on board again. And of
course, Alpina are happy to keep him company in his exploits.
